My Ham Family

Both my dad and sister are hams.  Here is a photo and an article of our ham family that appeared in the Fall 2003 QCWA Journal.

A QCWA Family -- Jesse Rausch W0JR , with daughter Jody WB0QVE, and son Scott WA0VKC with Scott's original HW-100. The pictured Drake units unfortunately are not the actual units used by Jesse and Scott in their early 70's Drake 2C/2NT/2CQ station.

Jesse, W0JR, QCWA #31294, became interested in radio and CW during World War II. He joined the Army Air Corps in April, 1943, and served as a radio operator with the Army Airways Communications System in North Africa, the Middle East, and in the Persian Gulf Command. After the war, Jesse returned home to the Agar area and began farming with his dad and brothers. In the mid sixties, he purchased his first shortwave receiver, a National NC-190, and received his Conditional license in 1967 as WA0QPX. He upgraded to Extra Class as WA0TZC in 1969, and also received his 2nd Class Commercial Radiotelephone license. He received his current call sign W0JR in 1977. Jesse and XYL Dorothy retired from farming in 1993, and currently divide their time between the farm and a home in Pierre. Jesse's current station includes an FT-990 and IC-706 MkII, feeding a nice antenna farm consisting of a TH3Mk3 HF beam, HF and VHF verticals, and various HF dipoles and longwires.

Jody, WB0QVE, QCWA #31965, received her Technician license in 1975 while attending the University of SD. After graduating in 1978 with a degree in Biology, she moved to southern California and received her MBA from UC - Irvine in 1981. After working for Rockwell International for two years, Jody began a career in commercial real estate sales in 1985, working for several national companies. She started her own mortgage and real estate companies in 1992 specializing in sub-prime loans and the listing and sale of distress properties. She continues to run her companies in California and will be expanding her mortgage lending activities to the South Dakota area after moving back to Pierre. When the move is completed, she will be receiving assistance from dad Jesse and brother Scott in getting the ham station set up.

Scott, WA0VKC, QCWA #31295, became interested in radio and electronics in grade school while listening to his Star Roamer shortwave receiver and dad Jesse's CW practice, and building many Heath and Knight kits. Scott received his Novice license in 1968, and later that year, after making the trip with Dad to the FCC test session in Sioux Falls, upgraded to Advanced class. He received his Electrical Engineering degree in 1975 from the SD School of Mines & Technology. Scott's career included technical and management positions in avionics firms including Rockwell International, Honeywell, and Lockheed Martin until retiring to the Black Hills in 2001. Scott finally upgraded to Extra Class in 2002. Scott's current ham radio interests include HF nets, high speed CW, receiver design, and restoration of vintage equipment, especially models previously used while growing up back on the farm.
